Adrian Kempe scored the overtime winner as the visiting Los Angeles Kings edged the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Thursday night.
Kempe one-timed a Quinton Byfield pass up and over the glove of Jake Oettinger 37 seconds into the extra period for his second overtime winner in as many games. Kempe, who also had an assist on Thursday, scored in overtime in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues.
Corey Perry and Cody Ceci also scored for the Kings while Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves.
Los Angeles has won back-to-back games to open a five-game road trip after snapping a four-game skid (0-2-2) in St. Louis. The Kings improved to 3-1-1 on the road.
Wyatt Johnston scored and added an assist, while Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars, who have dropped four straight games (0-3-1). Roope Hintz had a pair of helpers and Oettinger stopped 22 shots.
Johnston tied it 2-2 at 2:32 of the third, putting home the rebound of Hintz’s shot for his third power-play marker and fifth overall this season.
With the Stars trailing 1-0, Robertson evened it on a power play, snapping a shot past a screened Kuemper at 4:58 of the second period.
Los Angeles responded 1:29 later as Ceci’s slap shot from the point deflected off Stars forward Mavrik Bourque and past Oettinger.
Despite being outshot 8-5 in the opening frame, it was the Kings with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
With Mikko Rantanen in the box for cross-checking, Ilya Lyubushkin took a minor penalty for high-sticking on Perry.
On the ensuing 35-second 5-on-3 power play, Perry opened the scoring, banging home the rebound off Kevin Fiala’s shot for his first goal with the Kings.
Thursday was the first of three meetings. The Kings won two of three games against the Stars last season.
