Keyonte George scored 37 points — his second straight 30-plus-point game — and dished out six assists while leading the Utah Jazz to a 140-133 overtime victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday in Salt Lake City.
Utah overcame a historic performance from Dallas’ Cooper Flagg, who became the first 18-year-old to have a 40-point game in NBA history. Flagg produced 42 points while also finishing with six assists and seven rebounds.
Lauri Markkanen added 33 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Jazz, teaming with George to score nine of Utah’s 11 overtime points.
Kyle Filipowski chipped in 25 points and nine rebounds as the Jazz won for the fourth time in six games.
P.J. Washington chipped in 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who had won five of their previous six games. Naji Marshall had 15 points, and Ryan Nembhard added 14 points and 11 assists.
George hit a pair of free throws and made a 3-pointer to put Utah ahead for good a minute into overtime. Dallas did not score a basket in OT until Washington dunked with 56.5 seconds left. The Jazz went on an 11-4 run, capped by a tip dunk from Markkanen and a fadeaway jumper from Filipowski, to take a 140-133 lead with 31.8 seconds left.
Dallas’ Max Christie forced overtime by going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line with 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation.
Washington sank a 3-pointer and added a three-point play to power an 8-0 run that put Dallas up 96-86 late in the third quarter.
The Mavericks led 103-94 less than a minute into the fourth quarter after Flagg drove for a layup. Utah went on a 15-6 run and tied it at 109-109 on a 3-pointer from Filipowski with 7:51 to go.
Dallas went up by eight, but Utah bounced back and grabbed a 127-124 lead with 53.6 seconds left when Collier’s basket punctuated an 11-0 run. The Mavericks missed six consecutive shots to open the door for Utah to go in front.
The Mavericks were up 75-71 at halftime thanks to 24 points from Flagg, who ended the night shooting 13 of 27 from the floor.
