The Seattle Mariners placed southpaw reliever Gabe Speier on the 15-day injured list on Monday with left shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to May 3.
Seattle recalled Jose Suarez, who was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. Also a southpaw who performs primarily out of the bullpen, Suarez was designated for assignment by Atlanta on May 1.
Speier, 31, has been a mainstay out of the Seattle bullpen since 2023. He made 69 appearances for the club in 2023 and 76 in 2025. The 76 outings was tied for fifth in the majors and he also posted a 2.61 ERA and 0.87 WHIP.
Speier last appeared on April 29, allowing a run in 2/3 of an inning in a 5-3 win at Minnesota.
The Santa Barbara, Calif. native spent 2019-2022 in Kansas City, but did not establish himself until coming to Seattle in 2023. He has appeared in 230 games, with one start, and fashioned a 6-11 record, with a 3.60 ERA. He has struck out 226 batters and walked 56 in 192 2/3 innings.
Another solid bullpen arm, Seattle right-handed reliever Matt Brash was placed on the 15-day IL with trace inflammation in his right lat on May 1.
Suarez, 28, appeared in eight games and made one start in his second season in Atlanta. He was 0-1 with one save and a 6.61 ERA. Saurez spent 2019-2024 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels, where he started 61 games.
For his career, the Venezuelan is 22-30 with a 5.35 ERA. He has fanned 383 batters and walked 258 in 412 1/3 innings pitched.
In addition, Seattle recalled left-hander Josh Simpson from Triple-A Tacoma and optioned righty Cole Wilcox.
