Pete Crow-Armstrong recorded his first three-homer game and drove in six runs to power the host Chicago Cubs to a 17-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Crow-Armstrong increased his team-leading homer total to 36 with a solo shot in the first inning, a two-run blast in the second and a three-run homer in the seventh. Carson Kelly added a three-run homer and an RBI double for Chicago. Seiya Suzuki belted a two-run homer while Alex Bregman also went deep and added an RBI single as both players finished with three hits.
Tyrone Taylor matched Crow-Armstrong with four of the Cubs’ 19 hits and Nico Hoerner added an RBI single to help the team snap a three-game losing skid. The power display backed Kevin Gausman (8-11), who allowed five runs on six hits in five innings.
Cincinnati rookie Sal Stewart belted a two-run shot for his team-leading 30th homer of the season. Eugenio Suarez also had a two-run homer and JJ Bleday added a sacrifice fly for the Reds, who lost for the 10th time in 15 games.
Red Sox 6, Yankees 0 (Game 1)
Rookie Jake Bennett pitched six strong innings and visiting Boston piled on during a four-run ninth inning against New York.
Bennett (9-6) allowed three hits in his fourth career scoreless start. He struck out seven without a walk and has allowed one run on six hits in 12 1/3 innings during his two starts against the Yankees.
Wilyer Abreu homered in the first inning against New York starter Carlos Rodon (4-3), Adley Rutschman enjoyed his first three-hit game with the Red Sox and Andruw Monasterio added a two-run double to lead Boston.
Yankees 9, Red Sox 2 (Game 2)
Ben Rice capped New York’s five-run eighth inning with a two-run single during a three-RBI night as it evened the season series with a doubleheader split against visiting Boston.
The Yankees had seven hits in the eighth and 13 in the game after totaling just seven across the first two games of the series. New York actually took control during a three-run third inning off Brayan Bello (5-7). With the win, the Yankees moved three games ahead of the Red Sox for the American League’s top wild-card spot.
New York starter Max Fried held Boston to one run on three hits in 3 2/3 innings in his return from the injured list due to a bone bruise in his left elbow.
Mets 6, Astros 2
Nolan McLean tossed seven innings of two-hit ball and earned the win for host New York, which beat Houston in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series.
Juan Soto returned from the injured list after sitting out five weeks due to strained left calf and went 1-for-4 with the tiebreaking RBI single in the fifth for the Mets. Jared Young had three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run triple to close out the fifth-inning rally, as New York improved to 14-11 this month.
Yordan Alvarez homered and had a sacrifice fly for the American League West-leading Astros, who fell to 3-2 on their New York road trip.
White Sox 3, Twins 2
Andrew Benintendi went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBIs in Minneapolis as Chicago extended its win streak to four games.
Benintendi’s three hits marked the only hits of the day for the White Sox. Josh Bell and Walker Jenkins each went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Twins and Luke Keaschall added a double.
Chicago right-hander Erick Fedde (7-8) earned the win after holding Minnesota to two runs on three hits in five innings. Jenkins notched his first career RBI on a groundout in the second inning.
Tigers 2, Dodgers 1
Kevin McGonigle delivered a bases-loaded single in the ninth to drive in the winning run as host Detroit edged Los Angeles to even their three-game series.
Javier Baez scored both runs for the Tigers, who had lost eight of their previous nine games. Gleyber Torres drove in the other run for Detroit. Kenley Jansen (4-5) picked up the win in relief. Starter Keider Montero gave up one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Freddie Freeman drove in the lone run as the Dodgers lost for the fourth time in five games. The loss spoiled a strong outing by starter Blake Snell, who gave up one run and three hits in five innings while striking out 10.
Nationals 5, Marlins 4 (10 innings)
Dylan Crews’ two-out bases-loaded single in the 10th lifted host Washington to its first walk-off win of the season.
Crews lined an 0-1 four-seam fastball from Michael Petersen (3-4) into right-center field for his first career walk-off hit. Heriberto Hernandez homered for Miami, which has lost four of its last five.
Nationals starter Cade Cavalli left the game after taking a liner off his right calf with two out in the fourth. He recovered to throw Javier Sanoja out at first to end the half inning but limped to the dugout.
Braves 2, Rockies 1
Michael Harris II laced a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning to help streaking Atlanta top visiting Colorado for its sixth straight win.
Brent Suter (2-2) threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Braves, while Jaden Hill (0-3) took the loss after allowing Harris’ double among three hits in his one-inning relief appearance.
Willi Castro plated the Rockies’ lone run on a two-out run-scoring single in the sixth. Colorado’s Ryan Feltner was scratched from his scheduled start due to illness.
Blue Jays 4, Mariners 3
Alejandro Kirk singled in the go-ahead run in a two-run sixth, Jose Soriano pitched seven effective innings and host Toronto defeated Seattle.
Soriano (11-7) allowed three runs, five hits and two walks while striking out six. Louis Varland pitched the ninth to earn his 31st save. Cal Raleigh hit a solo home run for the Mariners, who led 3-0 after four innings.
The Blue Jays took a 4-3 lead in the sixth against Jose Ferrer (4-3). Charles McAdoo and Myles Straw walked. Brett Bateman grounded an RBI single with two outs that found a hole through the left side of the infield. Kirk’s single to right scored the go-ahead run.
Pirates 6, Cardinals 2
Rookie slugger Rafael Flores Jr. hit a three-run home run for visiting Pittsburgh, which effectively used six pitchers in a bullpen game to beat St. Louis and even their three-game series.
Brandon Lowe added a solo homer in the first inning for the Pirates, who overcame three straight errors at one point in the game. Right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski (7-6) earned the victory by allowing an unearned run and one hit in 3 1/3 relief innings.
Jacob Gonzalez hit a tie-breaking RBI single in the fourth and Flores made it 5-1 with two outs in the fifth with his seventh homer of the season off left-hander Brycen Mautz (0-1).
Diamondbacks 7, Giants 1 (Game 1)
Merrill Kelly combined with two relievers on a four-hitter, Lars Nootbaar broke a scoreless deadlock with a seventh-inning, pinch-hit grand slam and Arizona beat San Francisco in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.
Kelly (9-12) called it a day after seven shutout innings in which he allowed just a pair of singles and four walks. The right-hander struck out seven. Brandyn Garcia wrapped up the Diamondbacks’ seventh win in their last 10 games with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Making his third big-league start, Giants rookie left-hander Matt Wilkinson (0-2) was charged with two of the runs. He limited Arizona to three hits in his six-plus innings, with two walks and four strikeouts.
Giants 7, Diamondbacks 2 (Game 2)
Bryce Eldridge matched career highs with four hits and four RBIs, Rafael Devers drove in two runs with a pair of singles, and host San Francisco salvaged a doubleheader split with Arizona in the nightcap.
Making his major league debut after a promotion from Double-A Richmond, Giants right-hander Yunior Marte worked 4 2/3 innings, limiting the Diamondbacks to one run and three hits. Reiver Sanmartin (2-0), who relieved Marte with two outs in the fifth with the game tied at 1-1, was credited with the win after facing just one batter, striking out Game 1 hero Lars Nootbaar.
Arizona rookie left-hander Mitch Bratt (1-3) was charged with three runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Royals 8, Guardians 3
Josh Rojas hit a two-run homer and tied his career high with four RBIs as surging Kansas City scored eight unanswered runs to beat host Cleveland and clinch a series win.
Rojas had a two-run single in the sixth inning and added a two-run homer in the eighth to lift the Royals to their 12th win in 13 games. Royals reliever Anthony Gose (1-0) retired all five batters he faced to collect his first victory since June 17, 2022, while pitching for the Guardians.
Cleveland reliever Colin Holderman (6-4) took the loss after recording only one out. He was charged with four runs (three earned) during Kansas City’s breakout sixth. Angel Martinez had a two-run homer off starter Daniel Lynch IV for the Guardians.
Rays 7, Padres 6
Chandler Simpson slashed a tiebreaking, two-out single to cap a four-run, seventh-inning rally, lifting Tampa Bay to a wild win and a series victory over San Diego in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Rays’ Jonathan Aranda hit a tape-measure home run, and Junior Caminero ripped his 36th to tie Houston’s Yordan Alvarez for the American League lead.
Starting pitcher Nick Martinez allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Reliever Kevin Kelly (6-3) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, while Bryan Baker recorded his 39th save.
The Padres’ Dustin Harris had three hits, two runs and a stolen base. Ty France had two hits, including his 100th career homer. Manny Machado had two hits and two RBIs. Bradgley Rodriguez (3-3) allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk without retiring a batter.
Orioles 5, Athletics 3
Leody Taveras doubled twice and drove in three runs as Baltimore downed the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif.
Colton Cowser homered and scored two runs in the second game of the three-game series and Coby Mayo also scored twice for the Orioles. Right-hander Shane Baz (5-14) ended a five-start losing streak by limiting the Athletics to two runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.
Seeking his second straight win, A’s starter Jack Perkins (3-10) limited Baltimore to two runs (one earned) and four hits over five innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked four. Carlos Cortes had two hits and an RBI, and Jeff McNeil had two hits and scored a run for the A’s.
Brewers 5, Rangers 3
Jackson Chourio and William Contreras each homered in the first inning and Shane Drohan tossed five solid innings for host Milwaukee, which beat Texas for its fourth straight win.
Drohan (7-5) allowed one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts for his first victory since July 31. Luis Lara had two hits and two RBIs for Milwaukee, which won its fourth straight.
Brandon Nimmo hit a two-run homer as part of a three-hit game for the Rangers, and teammate Cody Freeman went deep for the first time this season.
Phillies 4, Angels 2 (10 innings)
Kyle Schwarber drove in the go-ahead run with a bloop double and Trea Turner added a two-run single to highlight a three-run 10th inning and lead Philadelphia over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Alec Bohm went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Turner had two hits and two RBIs for Philadelphia, which won for the 12th time in its last 14 games. Jhoan Duran (2-4) picked up the win, allowing one unearned run in two innings of relief.
Zach Neto hit a home run for Los Angeles, which finished with just four hits while losing its sixth straight game. Right-hander Trevor Martin (0-1), making his Angels debut after being claimed on waivers from Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, picked up the loss.
