Intent on keeping their young core intact, the Washington Wizards exercised rookie scale team options on five players Sunday, including Alex Sarr, the second overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The club will keep Sarr, along with 2024 picks guard Bub Carrington and forward Kyshawn George in the fold through the 2027-28 season via the fourth-year option. In addition, Washington exercised the third-year options on 2025 draft selections in guard Tre Johnson and forward Will Riley.
After averaging 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in the 2024-25 season, Sarr improved on those numbers and recorded 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game last season. The 7-footer from France just recorded his 200th career block on Monday at Charlotte and is the first Wizards player to reach that plateau before turning 22 since those stats were tracked starting in the 1973-74 season.
Sarr has seen a slight reduction in playing time through six games this season with veteran center Anthony Davis in the fold. Davis is averaging 22.3 points per game, while Sarr is at 9.3 points per contest.
Carrington has played in all 170 games in three seasons. He is averaging 10.1 points, 4.5 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game over his career and was tied with Trae Young for the team lead with 11 3-point field goals made this season.
The 6-foot-8 George is averaging 15.2 points per game, while shooting 45.9% from the floor through six games this season.
The deadline for exercising the third- and fourth-year player options was October 31.
